How to Learn Spanish

"How to learn Spanish?" is the question I'm asked again and again. So I eventually decided to write down all my different answers and publish them here on the Web. There's something here for everybody, no matter what your learning style is. Just go ahead and explore the pages - I'm confident you'll finally discover exactly how to learn Spanish!

My qualifications

My name's Terry Roberts, and I'm sure you're asking why I think I can give you lessons on how to learn Spanish. Well, first, I have experience of learning Spanish - I learned it at school, at university and here in Spain. And, according to my Spanish friends, I've learned the language so well that no one can tell I'm not Spanish!

Secondly, I've worked for over thirty years as a language teacher, teaching both English and Spanish as Foreign Languages. I've taught students, doctors, schoolchildren, housewives, politicians, engineers, lawyers, actors, IT specialists....

Finally, I set up my own agency arranging Spanish language courses in Spain and Latin America for non-Spanish speakers. I firmly believe that actually visiting, and studying in, a Spanish-speaking country, is by far the best way of perfecting the language. If you agree and would like to discover how to learn Spanish abroad, just visit ABT Language Services' website to explore the options open to you.

My advice

On the other pages of this website you'll see a wide range of different resources and aids that will help you to learn Spanish. However, my first, and most important, advice is this: there is no absolute best way of how to learn Spanish. Different people learn Spanish in different ways and by different paths. What worked marvelously for your friend (or for anyone else) will not necessarily work marvelously for you.

This has two important consequences:

  1. If your friend followed a course and learned Spanish in two months(!), don't despair if you start the same course and can say only "buenos días" after three months - it doesn't mean you're stupid and it doesn't mean that you'll never, ever, learn Spanish. The problem probably isn't you, it could well be the course that doesn't suit your learning style - try another one!
  2. If you're going to buy something, ask to try it first! You'll find lots of free resources on these pages, it's true, but if you're really serious about learning Spanish, you'll probably need to buy some kind of course or learning material or aids. Most of these courses or aids offer some kind of free sample - get that sample and try it. It's the only way to see if it suits your personal learning style.
